Dramshops

Iowa Youth Labor Bill

Iowa House approved in January a bill that would allow 16-17 year olds to work at bars and restaurants. They will be allowed work until 9 pm and until 11 pm during June 1 - Labor Day instead of the current requirement at 7 p.m.

The bill also permits youth employees to work as freezer and laundry workers, allowing them to work longer hours in compliance with the law. Some lawmakers were worried that this would make it more likely for youth to be sexually assaulted or have other problems.
